^ Yeah, or maybe it was TPTB's way to confirming that what Jack and Rachel had was more than just a kiss. Eric knew both of them so well, and if he recognized that they were in love, then maybe we would believe it too.

Me neither. Even though I thought they had the potential to be a good couple, I didn't think they were at the in love stage of their relationship.
