I just watched that episode and thought Buffy could of EASILY grabbed Faith before she threw herself off the roof, but during the commentary, they said they didn't want Buffy to be a killer. I can see that, even though Faith had it coming. I guess Buffy was so in shock that she stabbed Faith.

I always assumed it was because she was in shock over what she'd done.
Even her face...and the way SMG acts it lends itself to that.
Buffy accidentally killing Ted and Faith accidentally killing Alan (was that his name?) were so similar. Faith just didn't get a magical 'get out of jail free' robot card.
