I know. I actually began losing hope around the time J K Rowling stepped in,
presumably to try and clear the air with fans via Twitter and inform us peeps of Grindelwald's use of advanced Transfiguration to disguise himself as Graves. His use of a Transfiguration spell rather than Polyjuice in this case means that the original Graves wasn't needed to provide the hairs for it, so Grindelwald could have disposed of him early on in devising a plan to infiltrate MACUSA. Maybe he kept Graves alive somewhere to interrogate him for his mannerisms, and stuff?
