If you're using firefox or Chrome, they sometimes have add ons to deal with ads or pop ups or to make the browser go faster. Those are extensions. I think Internet Explorer has some, too. Windows 10 has a lot of built in "protections." On my firefox I have add ons to stop ads or websites tracking me, and one add on that lets me fiddle with how websites appear that I mostly use on tumblr.
