I noticed that too. Not sure if that was deliberate or not but I do think Murphy telling Clarke he loved Emori in 4x08 was powerful not only because Richard was amazing in that scene but also because we hadn't seen him say to Emori so we really felt the emotions he felt in that moment.
And when we first saw them kiss in 305 - even though it was obvious they liked each other but seeing them kiss in the woods was like "wow, Murphy actually has a girlfriend"
