It would have been like Beauty and the Beast, I think, where he's fallen in love with her and she urges him to let her go visit her father
It all depends on how Rey would have responded. If she had simply said "I need more time to think about it... Please don't take this the wrong way... I just can't leave my friends to die", I think Kylo might have responded in quite a mature way.
Rey reaching for the lightsaber ignited his fear and frustration. They had just finally found a way to work as a team, so Kylo would have felt deeply betrayed and confused.
