I definitely see that happening if he didn't die.
The storyline has been done before, so as sad as it was, it also was necessary for him to die, so everyone else can move up and forward. Soon after Colin woke up from the coma, I felt he was just holding Amy back. He definitely wasn't the same person, though I didn't know old Colin very well either.
