Once Hollywood started making big Marvel movies, the tail started wagging the dog and Marvel became something it shouldn't have. I date the end of the classic era of Marvel comics to around July 2000, when the first X-Men movie came out. That's the beginning of the end. Very few Marvel comics released past then satisfy me. It was already getting screwed up in the late '90s, but it takes on a whole different flavour this century. Less real, less sincere, less direct, less alive.

Technically the first big Marvel movie was Blade in 1998, but that was more a vampire movie than a superhero movie and it didn't have the same effect as X-Men. X1 really started the modern craze for comic book movies. And while that might be good for comic book movies, it wasn't so good for the quality of the comics.
