I think it's more a case of her really loving Mitch as Gail's husband. And she had a point about needing a reason for everyone to come together for the finale, but they easily could have done a 10 year school reunion if they wanted to. However, that would have brought other lesser known characters back and would not have included the rest of the main cast like Grams and Doug and Bessie, etc.
