I think it was really a continuation of what we saw at the end of season one, where it was no longer just important to him that he protect Octavia, but rather that he protect all the deliquents because they’d all become his family at that point.
It’s still a great season for him and always will be. But season three definitely amps up his complexity, regardless of how one feels about it.

Agreed, season 2 just cemented how committed he was to protecting the others the best he could though we already saw glimpses of that in season 1.
