But orchestrated by the WB demands. He had plans to bring Tess in a Season finale reveal in Season 1. But the show was struggling, and was in danger and the WB demanded changes... So they brought in Tess earlier than planned. And made it more conspiracy, and dangerous there at the end where they were figuring out what it all meant...

It worked, ratings improved a bit and the Tabasco sauce campaign saved the show. But it didn't help in Season 2 as the same happened again, although I think ratings were slightly higher... But the network was planning Smallville for following season, so they thought they could get rid of Roswell...

But UPN wanted Buffy, and they got offered Roswell too... And they took it. But only had loyalty to Buffy, and cut Roswell at the first chance...

Both Max and Liz suffered. Liz had the better excuse. Max didn't. He was a teenage boy fooled by his hormones. Neither looked good during Season 2. And Max at times in Season 3. Liz always had the better excuse.... "For the greater good, for Max's sake." She sacrificed a lot. And then in the wake Alex dying. She was doing it to make sure Alex's death was solved, and for the truth to come out... She never imagined the killer would be that close, or the truth and consequences to be that brutal.
