We will never know truly who to blame. Katims was the one behind the show, but the WB was making a lot of demands that season, because the show was struggling. And creativity, I don't know why did it given the show was struggling. It would alienate Max and Liz fans. At the same time you had the feud between Max and Liz in the wake of Alex's death which made fans even madder And then they go and write out Tess, and the baby... so the whole plotline was inconceived, and while it would give Max and Liz a lot to get over to truly reunite, with it hanging over their heads in Season 3.
It ultimately made Max and Liz stronger, but it was not a easy road to follow. Season 2 had a lot of interferance behind it...
