I agree Sarah, her scenes with Lionel was some of her best stuff of the series whether people liked it or not. 
And I always said that I don't know what it was but everytime I saw emotional scenes between Martha and Clark, it really got to me. It seemed like around Annette, Tom acting really pushed to another level.
Like the episode when we FINALLY see Clark cry at the end of Unsafe and Martha tells off Clark about what he did under the red kryptonite influence.
Or the episode AFTER Jonathan dies, and Clark sees the video tape of Jonathan and he cries watching it while wearing Jonathan's tape and Martha goes over to hug him.
Or in Season 5 when Martha is dying... and they have that sad moment.
