That's a good point. That's a very good point. Civil and human rights shouldn't be up for debate.
At the same time, I do believe that they need to be treated as a priority in any society that claims to be democratic. After all, if we're not all equal before the law (in principle, at least), what's the point of the rest?
It's a weird position to find myself in, I'll admit. I'm usually the first person to argue that modern governments should be more than able to handle more than one issue at a time. And I still maintain that.
But, all the same, equality for all must be enshrined.
