They were true partners. And true friends. And their friendship was the basis of their relationship, and while it could get testy at times. You knew they had each other's backs. Brennan would do things she wouldn't have done before she met Booth or got involved with solving cases...
Part of it was the Brennan genes and her parents dark past, visiting itself on their daughter and she could cross some blurry ethical lines but she really only did it in the name of Booth. That showed how much she loved him even when she was still fighting it.
Heck she even became friends with Hannah, even though she probably wished she didn't exist.
When it all went bad with Hannah. She sought Booth out and even dealt with his dark rant, and just stayed and listened and was a friend.
It was a unique relationship.
