Flashpoint was a huge mistake on Barry's part. He was very lost after Henry's death and it was also quite plot driven because they needed a finale cliffhanger to get them to Flashpoint.
To be fair to Barry, it wasn't intentional. He was surprised to find Dante dead, Caitlin with powers and Iris/Joe at odds.
I wouldn't go as far to say it was OOC because he was almost willing to do the exact same thing end of S1 but with their permission that time.
