I don't think he wanted it. I think it was a storyline dictating move given they were at the beginning of the season. And therefore they could use it as a big bang storyline that would drive Booth, who was just coming off being in prison. And it would test him, and both Booth and Brennan as a couple.

Most don't want to be killed off... Because it prevents any possibility of a return visit. Most shows do it for storyline reasons. And in the case, if they had any other way. I don't think Sweets could have gone off unless he quit the FBI, and vanished. But he was so tied now to Booth and Brennan and even Daisy, to think he would just leave...

Even if it meant he could come back... But it allowed the show new directions but I wished they could have gone another way.

The only way was Sweets surviving the wounds, and being placed in a coma or in rehab. But the way they chose, brought on a lot of storylines... But I still missed him.
