Sometimes but sometimes remakes can find their own fanbase/be beloved.
Take a movie like
Shop Around The Corner with James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. It was made in 1940 and was so well received that a musical version, In The Good Old Summertime, was made only 9 years later starring Judy Garland and Van Johnson. (Could you imagine if only 9 years passed between an original and a sequel these days?
)
Then in 1998,
You've Got Mail with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan came out and that was based on the same premise but threw in the internet to keep up with the times.
I love all three versions of those movies. The original is probably the most celebrated but I probably prefer
You've Got Mail. All were successful, however.
