I think the basic concept of the show could still work, a bunch of teenagers hanging out in a basement and occasionally smoking weed. Since legality of marijuana is a much discussed topic, it could be worked into the show. Maybe the gang attends "Legalize it!"-rallies to show support, but have to do it secretly since their parents still wouldn't approve. Some of the more problematic jokes would probably have to go, I can see them expanding on pop culture jokes instead. The pop culture would obviously have to be a bit different, considering the amount of time between the 70s and now. Cell phones and social media would come into play, but it's tough to say how.
