I think it was mentioned here before that the Martells are flexible with polygamy so that would explain Rhaegar taking Lyanna as his wife but then that wouldn't sit well with Lyanna being a Stark. I hope they'll address this on the show. Bran needs to get a vision of the past again.

Outside of Dorne, Polygamy isn't really accepted anymore. Even with the Targaryans, I think the last one to have multiple wives was Maegor the Cruel which was way in the past. If Rhaegar hadn't been killed and King's Landing wasn't sacked, how did he expect people to react to him taking two wives?
Even in Dorne I don't think multiple *marriages* are a thing, but I could be wrong there.
The whole Rhaegar&Lyanna situation is still so mysterious, even with R+L = J being confirmed in the show. Lyanna is described as strong willed and stubborn, so to be a second wife something must have been really convincing to her. Hopefully next season will shed some more light.
