It surprised me, but if it's true that Kane did float his mother than I don't think it's weird or even overly harsh to be honest. They've developed a pretty close relationship, so it would make sense that something big like that between them would need to be aired out.
It reminded me of season 1 when I think Clarke had a similar moment with Abby. When they were talking on the radio and Clarke had just been working on getting the knife out of Finn. Abby told Clarke that her dad would be proud of her and Clarke snapped back with something like "Don't talk about my dad." So that's a cool parallel, I think
