They claim he was busy and couldn't film so they wrote the letter instead. I'm assuming they didn't need him to write it
so it kind of makes sense he wasn't fully aware from that standpoint. However with them making that "endgame" it would stand to reason if they think TO will have a s5 (which seems unlikely, but who knows) then he should know what could be in store for his character's future...
