I think in a lot of cases with these shows, they try to end them in such a way that could give viewers closure just in case they don't get renewed because they are filming fairly far ahead. Maybe there was a possibility that DC might not have gotten a 5th season, so they had to try and please the DJo fans (given that it's named after Dawson).
That's how I like to look at it anyway, so I don't get so annoyed with certain shows.
