I think Star Trek peaked in 1986, and by 1989 the franchise was getting a little worn out. Star Trek: TNG was still trying to find its own identity, and the movie franchise got way off track. The early 90's is when the Trek franchise started to figure out where it was gonna go from there, but it was kind of awkward. But 1982 to 1986 was just the best time to be a Trek fan.

I saw IV in the theater. I think a lot of non-Trek people did. I wasn't even a Trekkie. i loved it. I saw II and III on HBO back in the early to mid 80s. I haven't seen any of the films after "Generations".
