There was a moment when Eric was talking about the guy at the evil company. I thought he seemed to confirm that he knew that it was Jack that he was supposed to be meeting. I guess I'm viewing that scene differently.

That makes more sense.
He's all about keeping his friends. He would never let them drift away too far.
I got that sense as well. He knew that he shouldn't be part of the evil company, but something kept him there. He needed Eric's influence to clear the black thoughts.
I forgot about that scene.
