Season of Doing
When children are small,
And demands are large,
And change goes by unchecked.
Rare, rare stretches of stillness
Are terrifying.
You realize you’re not keeping track.
Of anything.
You’re loosed
Out there
Flailing
Surviving
No plan
Not clearly purposed.
Just doing.
Doing.
You just get doing
And the doing begets doing.
You have to be careful
Because if you stop,
You might sense,
Or feel,
Or suspect,
That the doing is frivolous.
An emptiness creeps in.
Alone.
You feel so much more afloat,
You doubt,
There’s time for doubt.
And doubt
Ultimately leads to faith.
And art.
Because only in doubt do we seek.
I trust this season.
This season of doing.
