My simple thought is because they were linked in terms of the whole hybrid thing- both two things at the same time. Jacob had the highest chance of imprinting on her because he was the Alpha therefore his genetics were a lot stronger. Had Sam not imprinted on Emily I think he would have stood a greater chance to imprint on Renesmee.
