In this modern (1987) take on "Cyrano De Bergerac", Steve Martin plays C. D. Bales, the fire chief in a small Pacific Northwest town. Because of his abnormally large nose, he doesn't go after Roxanne (Daryl Hannah), the local girl of his dreams, but helps a new recruit at the station win her heart with his own words.



The cast also includes Shelley Duvall ("Popeye", "The Shining"), Fred Willard, Michael J. Pollard ("Bonnie & Clyde") and John Kapelos ("Sixteen Candles", "The Breakfast Club"). Steve Martin also wrote the movie.
