The show did drop in quality in its later seasons the best were probably S1, 2 & 4. The only thing I really enjoyed well I don't know that enjoyed is the right word but found most compelling in the final seasons was the development of Dex and Deb's relationship.
I HATED the ending but not so much because of Dexter's ending as you could argue he didn't necessarily deserve a happy ending but because of what they did to Deb. Absolutely heartbreaking that was especially after everything she'd been through.
