Brian was partially responsible for Ethan's decision to put the music first, with that whole "There's nothing noble about being poor" thing, and then he calling Ethan a whore for playing on the streets for cash. I think what happened was these little sly remarks got him thinking and ultimately, Ethan realized Brian had a point.
