I would have loved a talk as well, and I'm grateful that David's reaction in those scenes says quite a bit on its own. He's looking at her like he's not sure what to make of her - like he can't reconcile this vulnerable, desperate, yet hopeful woman, with the Evil Queen he had known & fought for so long.
He may have been far from understanding her at that point, but he had gotten a glimpse of Regina as a real person.
