Oh, something just occurred to me. Maybe his wife and/or child, (if he had/has a family), were turned into zombies. Only he didn't want to believe it, and is in denial.
So when Liv finally tells him, or he finds out, he'll finally have to accept that zombies are real, and terrible crap is happening.
