Apparently something went wrong with the Earth's magnetic poles, and the radiation belts that shield the Earth from solar radiation have been affected. Angela saw a solar flare hitting the Earth and creating an Extinction event that Erica is preparing for by sending people into the future to repopulate the planet. But Angela also saw that Evos would save the planet from the event, but Erica doesn't trust Evos and Angela realized that she trusted the wrong person.
But anyway, I don't think it's a coincidence that a huge solar flare is headed for Earth, and Luke can absorb solar energy and channel it into his power.
