Vampires on Buffy were considered the monsters and on TVD/TO they're the heroes. I think if they had taken a page from Angel (and not the baby plot) they could have made the vamps real heroes instead of monsters that just so happen to be the focus.
This is true, the most popular genres I can see at the moment would be fantasy/medieval and zombies.
