Don't forget: most present day TV shows don't have the luxury of planning ahead several seasons, when it comes to their characters' relationships....the pressure is high, these days, to deliver sex, love, and romance, immediately!!! M&S were simply planned on a long time scale - that's the secret of their success (and the reason for failure of so many other recent TV shows' ships).
