I definitely saw girls act that way & I know I had a phase where I did it myself too. I would focus on crushes I had on older guys that I knew I'd never get because I didn't want to really deal with actually having to date guys my own age.
Plus, with her dad leaving her & all, I'm going to expect that we'll see Maya will have some kind of trust issues/insecurities, so it makes sense to me.
