Based on the line in "I Don't" with Abby saying the pearls belonged to Luka's mother, I would guess that his mom had died and probably had been gone for a number of years. For someone who was on the show as long as Goran was, Luka did not get the family background as some of the other main, long term characters. Heck, I think we knew just as much about Cleo's parents as we did Luka's.
