I think the problem with most of these sorts of marches begins with the word "march". There's a reason sitdown protsts are more peaceful - you can't start physical fights when you're not supposed to move!</STRONG>
I've gone to marches/rallies, whatever - I don't know, does that count as a protest march? - mostly Israel advocacy rallies and so on, and it's all been with an entirely peaceful intent. People are there to show support, to make sure the message gets out, etc. Not all rallies end up nasty or violent.

Just like sending letters to the editor, debating on public forums, etc., rallies that get noticed in a positive way (as in, NOT because they beat up other people, broke windows, waved offensive signs, whatever) can be an effective way of spreading a message.
