| I've read that France does have a fairly active police force, compared to the United Kingdom for example. A good book that covers the topic is The Base by Jane Corbin, a BBC reporter. Despite the source it's a quite examination of Al Quaeda. The last chapter isn't as well researched as the rest of the book, but is peripheral to the rest anyway.
