Especially when you felt guilty for betraying your beloved and couldn't turn back time to change anything. He was a completely misunderstood man and thankgod Dumbledore and then later Harry saw what good was still inside him. He helped save the day. Harry would have been toast long before he was old enough to stand up for himself properly if it wasn't for Severus. People who continue to think he was a bad character completely misread the books.
