Kelso also felt sympathy for Eric in that episode (i.e. about not wanting Donna to leave). It's nice actually seeing Kelso care about him. Those rare moments the show gave us probably indicate a deeper friendship. The writers just never thought to depict it too much.
But Eric did take Kelso's side in the Hyde/Jackie/Kelso situation in S5 (
),and he helped Kelso get the waiter job in S6. I sense the potential for a one-shot that fills in the blanks in their friendship.
