I agree with you that Riley was 'too real-life' but come on... the 'edgier' options as of season 4, was only Angel. And with the writers having written that a 'happy moment' was all he needed to become evil... well... that was the first nono to be an option for Buffy. Then ... they come up with the 'ring' option, Angel could have been normal and have a happy relationship with Buffy.. but again nono he had to fight for the Apocalipsis.
For sure then, Riley had to be with Buffy and have the closest to a normal life as she wanted. We have to think that the show belongs to Buffy, she's the main character and we should want her to be as happiest as she can. Therefore, Riley

Last week I finished with S4 and loved the episode where B&R got trapped in Riley's room generating sexual energy to the house that used to be an Horphan's house. LOL LOL !! Love their faces at the end !!
