they weren't like best friends until like Season 3. I think when Lucas saw the pain and anguish that Nathan went through in Season 2 when Haley was on tour with Chris Keller that he saw something that Nathan was really in love with her. And Nathan was going through a really dark time and needed someone to talk to that wasn't going to judge him or his decisions to marry Haley
