We're speculating over at v-d.net that killing an Original might lead to the subsequent death of all vampires sired by them.
So tonight when (probably) they manage to kill Finn, Sage, who is likely to be the only vampire sired by him, dies as well, and the team figure that connection out right away.
Hence the trip next episode to trace ancient blood lineages....Elena and Damon need to go find out which Original the Salvatores are descended from so they know who not to kill.
I really love this idea because it will then recall the kind of loyalty vampires should owe the Originals for giving them immortality. We saw a bit of it with Trevor and Elijah in 2x08, and hints of it with the whole no-vampire-can-use-the-dagger thing, but I'd love for this kind of hierarchy to be made official.
