It was a custom designed ring they say so he had this planned at least a couple months before so i don't think it was just a reaction to Britney's engagement but its possible he knew she was about to get engaged since she was calling Jason her husband on a radio interview a few months ago.
Its hard to understand why he is doing it he doesn't seem in love with Jessica.
