I'm pretty brand new to this fandom, but this is the 3rd mention of him being weird in interviews about the Arthur/Gwen pairing. I haven't been following, but I have 3 guesses:

1) As a man he doesn't want to be pigeonholed as a romantic lead and sex object (male actors put a lot of effort into resisting this)

2) He's getting some indirect flak because of race

3) He's getting some direct flak because of race

If you've followed any programs or fandoms you've seen that racism can have a negative impact on what makes it to our television screens. I want to add that even though I am an American I have done some research on race within the UK so I am not speaking entirely through an American filter.
