We read both Bel Ami and Madame Bovary in my French lit class. There wasn't much going on in either of them. Madame Bovary makes women look capricious and shallow. My French prof went on about how she's sexually liberated and no one can accept her for it, but that was crap. Her husband was a totally nice guy and she just cheated on him over and over again.
