They seemed a little awkward in Season 4, but it was done in purpose. Summer lost her best friend, she felt like she lost herself, so she acted different. And I'm not just talking about the whole being an activist. But her personality was slightly changed. And so their relationship got a bit weird for a bit, but they were still the same old Seth/Summer.
And I agree! They were perfect every season.
