Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series (2010)
Succeeding David Tennant's popular Tenth Doctor wasn't an easy task for new Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith—as tall an order as taking over for new series creator Russell T. Davies was for Steven Moffat. Smith found a new way to twist together the Doctor's alien quirkiness and a charm based in deep compassion, while Moffat indulged in his love for the series by celebrating the Doctor's infallibility which—somehow—is intricately intwined with his gaping vulnerabilities. The result was a brash and color-saturated first season for the Eleventh Doctor, uneven and weird, brazenly marching right up to the Doctor's indispensability (from Winston Churchill ringing him up to help him out of a spot of bother, to having the universe literally end when the Doctor is taken out of time) rather than merely suggesting it as the show had done in the past. The throughline story involving Amy Pond and the crack in her wall is the season's saving grace, and Karen Gillan's rich performance is a constant joy—perfectly leavened by Arthur Darvill's sweetly ordinary Rory, whose love for Amy survives even Rory's death (and two rounds of nicely handled undeath). Despite the erosion of subtlety the fifth season is a solid introduction for a Doctor whose development will be worth watching. Bonus features include "Meanwhile in the Tardis," newly filmed bridging scenes between the stories; Doctor Who Confidential; "Monster Files"; In-Vision Commentaries; Outtakes; Video Diaries.
