I think he becomes almost like a stand-in father for Richard after Georges death. Obviously, he could not replace him but he took over teaching Richard and aiding him along in the whole "Seeker process."
Now that I'm thinking about it, Cara definitely takes on that "annoyed, younger sister" role with both Richard and with Kahlan. Like how she hurries their good-byes along and rolls her eyes.
It's somewhat amusing.
